How the calculation works
A trade's result is the price move in its favour multiplied by the size of the position. A long position gains when the exit is above the entry; a short position gains when the exit is below it. Measured in pips, a move from 1.0850 to 1.0910 on EUR/USD is 60 pips.
To turn pips into money, multiply by the pip value of the position. Half a standard lot of EUR/USD is 50,000 euros, worth $5.00 a pip, so 60 pips is $300.00. When the quote currency is not the dollar the result comes out in that currency first: a USD/JPY trade gains or loses yen, which the calculator converts into dollars at the exit price.
The figure is the result of the price move alone. What your broker reports also includes the spread paid on entry, any commission, and overnight financing (swap) on positions held past the daily rollover, so the realised result is usually a little lower than the figure here.
The formula
Price move = Exit − Entry (long) or Entry − Exit (short)
Pips = Price move ÷ Pip size
Pip value = Pip size × Contract size × Lots × Conversion rate
Result (US dollars) = Pips × Pip value
- Pip size
- 0.0001 on most currency pairs, 0.01 when the quote currency is the yen, 0.01 for gold, 0.001 for silver.
- Contract size
- Units in one standard lot: 100,000 of the base currency, 100 troy ounces of gold, 5,000 troy ounces of silver.
- Conversion rate
- What one unit of the quote currency is worth in US dollars. For EUR/USD it is 1; for USD/JPY it is 1 ÷ the exit price.
Worked example
A long position of 0.50 lots in EUR/USD, bought at 1.0850 and closed at 1.0910.
- Price move
- 1.0910 − 1.0850 = 0.0060
- Pips
- 0.0060 ÷ 0.0001 = 60
- Pip value
- 0.0001 × 100,000 × 0.50 = $5.00
- Result
- 60 × $5.00 = $300.00
The trade made $300.00, before spread, commission and swap.
Had the price fallen to 1.0820 instead, the same position would have lost 30 pips, or $150.00.

Frequently asked questions
How is profit or loss calculated?
For a long trade it is (exit − entry) × units; for a short trade, (entry − exit) × units. The result comes out in the quote currency and is converted to US dollars.
Does the result include spread, commission or swap?
No. It is the result of the price move alone. Spread, commission and overnight financing change what your broker reports.
Why is a USD/JPY result converted at the exit price?
A USD/JPY position gains or loses yen. Those yen are worth whatever the exchange rate is when the trade closes, so the calculator converts them at the exit price.
